The Olympus hone is a natural whetstone originated in the mountains of Greece. The base material is Shale stone like the best finishers waterhones. Its fine abrasive abilities have been recently discovered by a local sharpener and razor enthusiast.
The hone is used for finishing and endfinishing of straight razors. Its position in razor finishing is comparable to those of top finishers around the world, such as Thuringian, Surgical Black Arkansas (Ultra Fine) and some of the best JNats, but with its own distinctive edge. In our experience, the razor edge becomes a very sharp, but still smooth.
The method we use and recommend for finishing with this stone consists of 3 stages:
Stage 1: Light mud dissolved in water.
Stage 2 running water.
Stage 3: lather from shaving soap mixed with water. The endfinishing with lather from shaving shoap generates an especially and very sharp fine edge.
All stones are hand-mined and hand-worked and they have an irregular shape which depends on the natural shape of the stone. They have a seal of authenticity on the back as well as a serial number of the stone.
A limited number of stones are available due to their rare nature and we do not know how many more will be available in the future.
